Project LEAF Sites

Project: Jean Sweeney Open Space Park  (Project Status: Active)

This site sits on 22 acres of land,  in Alameda. Project LEAF hopes to help develop a 2 acre parcel for a new Community Garden.

This site is the former Alameda Beltline Railroad property that was secured by the City at its original purchase price due to the advocacy efforts of long-time resident Jean Sweeney. The property is bounded by  Constitution Way, Atlantic Boulevard & Sherman Street.

The Community Garden hopes to have raised moveable beds, areas for on site composting, education classroom, and in the future chicken coops and bee hives.

Currently efforts are underway with a steering committee to discuss the Planning of this Community Garden. For more information please visit the City of Alameda's Website at: http://alamedaca.gov/recreation/projects/sweeney-open-space-park-sweeney-park

Previous Project: Old Island High Site  (Project Status: Owned by Housing Authority)

The site sits on 0.83 acres of land on the corner of Eagle Avenue and Everett Street in Alameda. Our neighborhood only has access to 0.14 acres of green space per 1000 residents. The State's eligibility criteria stipulates that a community should have access to a ratio of 3 acres of usable park space per 1000 residents.

The site back in the 1800s was originally farmlands which were tended by a squat farmer named Franklin Pancoast. Project LEAF's hopes are that we will turn the abandoned property back into a working "Urban Farm" and the land will come full circle in it's history.

The plans for the site are to reuse one of the existing school classrooms for educational purposes and a location for other Alameda groups to meet. The majority of the land will be turned into raised planting beds centered around a main event lawn. The site will host chickens, and bees and be able to compost as much as possible. We hope to have a shed for a tool
